実行委員紹介

日米学生会議は2026年で92周年を迎える。戦争や資金難など、様々な事情により幾度か会議の開催が中断されたが、多大なるご支援のおかげで第78回目の開催に至ることができた。偉大な先輩方が紡いできた日米学生会議は単なる一夏の思い出を超え、日米関係を根底から支えてきた宝物である。第78回日米学生会議実行委員長としてこの長い歴史の一頁を刻むことは大変光栄であり、身の引き締まる思いでもある。

実行委員会が発足してから常に向き合ってきた問いがある。私たちは何のためにこの会議を開催するのか。なぜ2026年の夏に渡米し、日米の学生で議論をする必要があるのか。何時間にも及ぶ議論の結果、私たちが出した答えが第78回の会議テーマに反映されている。戦争、パンデミック、そして分断。目まぐるしく変動する社会情勢の中、人間関係は希薄化し、対話不足が進んでいる。そんな時代だからこそ、出身国や学生という肩書きに囚われず、本音の意見でぶつかり合う対話が重要だと考える。

少し硬い文章を書いてしまったので、日米学生会議が「意識の高い人」の集まりだというイメージを助長してしまったかもしれない。しかし、実際には所属や年齢などの肩書きは関係なく、ただひたすら全力で議論に向き合う人たちが集まる場所であることを強調したい。参加者として、ありとあらゆるバックグラウンドを持つ学生たちとの対話を通じ、自分の視野の狭さを実感するとともに他者の存在を通して自分を省みることもできた。2025年の夏が”life-changing experience”であったことに微塵の疑いもない。78回会議が参加者にとっても同様に最高な経験となるよう、実行委員一同心血を注いで準備を進めている。

第78回会議は米国で開催される。2026年夏、サンフランシスコ、ナッシュビル、ワシントンD.C.を訪れる中で、どんな発見があるだろうか。米国の学生と三週間寝食を共にして議論に向き合う中で、自分一人では見ることのできなかった世界が見えてくるだろう。来夏、人生を変える覚悟を持った学生にお会いできることを心から楽しみにしている。

For 91 years, JASC has brought together students from opposite sides of the world and provided the opportunity to engage in honest conversation. The enduring nature of the program has made it the oldest university exchange program of its kind between the United States and Japan. For a relationship as important as the one between our two countries, the conference holds profound significance. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and JASC prepares young people to become the confident, well-rounded, and open-minded leaders that can successfully work together for a better future.

Official relationships between nations start on the personal level, and this is what JASC cultivates. Over the three weeks of the conference, we learn how to work through our cultural differences to build trust, perseverance, and friendship. Every moment provides an opportunity to learn from each other. This environment is electric, alive with the energy of new experiences and new ways of thinking.

The diversity of ideas is what makes JASC special. Each delegate comes to the conference with a unique course of study, personal background, and comfort zone. By the end of JASC, I hope that everyone’s comfort zone has been expanded. After all, it is only through challenge and resilience that we are able to grow.
